Founded in 2000, the Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership addresses the critical need for high-quality professional development for educators and is the largest (science, technology, engineering, and math) STEM-focused teacher leadership program in North Carolina.

Approximately 25-50 outstanding K-12 teachers from across the state are selected annually. The program requires a one-year commitment that is designed to allow teachers to maintain their current school system duties. Key components are a three-week summer internship with a mentor in a research or applied STEM setting, and 80 hours of professional development that builds leadership capacity and promotes curricular design bridging STEM at work with STEM at school.

The Kenan Fellows Program is an innovative model to promote teacher leadership and advance K-12 education. Applicants who receive fellowships must commit to 80 hours of professional development, a 3 week summer research/industry internship experience, and the development and dissemination of a curriculum, professional development or community engagement product. Fellows will be asked to participate, voluntarily, in a few brief evaluation activities to help the program improve over time. These will include: a few short surveys; a short, anonymous survey of some of their students; and possibly a visit to their classroom and a brief phone interview by the Kenan Fellows Program's external evaluator. It is our expectation that principals and superintendents will utilize Kenan Fellows to support school and district initiatives.
